First Western working with the Fleadh organisers, developed and provided training to over 800 volunteers working at the Fleadh. Over 50 team leaders received training in leadership, people management skills, event management, first aid, Fleadh orientation. Sector specific training was developed and delivered to 800 volunteers relevant to their chosen volunteer area. Training included topics such as customer service skills, being a welcome ambassador, first aid, compliant handling, Fleadh awareness and knowledge of specific skills that individuals required for their chosen volunteer area.
Organised on a voluntary basis, one of the major components of success of the Fleadh is the input and work of over 1,000 volunteers. The volunteers work as welcome ambassadors, traffic and car par stewards, event stewards, marketing and administration and in competitions. They are the face of the Fleadh and crucial in showcasing Sligo and its welcome.
In August 2014 Sligo welcomed over 350,000 visitors to the Fleadh Cheoil Na hEireann. This 10 day event is the world’s largest traditional music festival. Competitors come from all over the world to the event and over 15,000 musicians took part in competitions and workshops. Over 250 other events are organised to make the event a feast of entertainment and family fun. These included music sessions, marching bands, competitions, ceili bands, concerts, singing, street music, exhibitions and the arts.
